Food Blogs: ‘Hurry Up, I’m Starving!’

Working as the blogger relations manager for PR Newswire, I come across my fair share of great blogs that cover a wide variety of subject matters and interests.  And as you might expect, some blogs are better than others. With that in mind and in an effort to highlight the better ones, I do my best to review one of these blogs every day.

This week my focus has been on food blogs. Maybe, it’s cause Halloween was just a couple of days ago, or maybe it’s because Thanksgiving is around the corner. But, really, I think about food all year round.  Holidays or not, I’d like to know what’s for dinner. And shortly thereafter, I’d like to know what’s for dessert. So with that in mind, let’s fire up the grill, measure out all our ingredients, and have a taste of this brief roundup of some of the best food blogs I’ve seen lately.

Mobile Cuisine is part trade magazine and part foodie lifestyle site.  Take a look around in any city and you’ll see food trucks. But take a look around the internet, and this is one of the few sites you’ll find covering this growing movement (pun intended) in the food industry. If I were to pitch this blog, I’d start with food, obviously. But I think stories that touch on social media outreach and small business services could also work well. Check out the full review here.

First Look, Then Cook was originally an idea. It was originally something the author ‘wanted to do.’ Today, it’s a top-notch food blog, offering recipes (and pictures) of food you just don’t see many other places. I’d cite ‘meatloaf cupcakes’ and ‘candy sushi’ as exhibits A and B in this argument. If I were to pitch this blog, I’d look for stories that deal with food, but also family. Check out the full review here.

The Great Balancing Act is a food blog. But it’s really so much more. The author is a foodie, but she’s also a personal trainer. She’s also living with Hodgkins Lymphoma. There’s a lot to this woman and her blog, and as the name suggests, she does keep it in balance. If I were to pitch this blog, I’d look for food stories. Stories surrounding personal fitness might also work. Check out the full review here.

The Virgine Cuisine is the perfect example of someone making good use of their time while looking for a job. I’m pretty sure the author eventually got a job, but you get the feeling she could have done this site full-time if not.  If I were to pitch this blog, I’d go with food. But home improvement stories might also get some traction. Check out the full review here.

Yummy Chunklet is a great example of someone blogging as a compliment to their full-time job. In this case, the author is a trial attorney in Chicago. From the looks of the site, she’s also pretty good at multitasking. She’s definitely a great cooker. If I were to pitch this blog, I’d pitch food. If somehow there was something that intersected with legal matters and food, I’d maybe pitch that one, too. Check out the full review here.

That’s all for now. In the meantime, if there’s a blog I should be reviewing, drop me a line or a note in the comments, and I’ll take a look. Until next time…

Author Tom Hynes is PR Newswire’s manager of blogger relations. And as you may have guessed, he has a twitter account.
